What’s in My Make-Up Bag? *Collaboration*

26 Jan

Hello my lovely ones,

I haven’t done a ‘what’s in my make-up bag’ post for about 2 years. (That is crazy) The original post is pretty funny to look back on, the ‘soft focus’ photos taken on my old Blackberry mobile phone and to see how my make-up collection has rocketed since then. Oh’ dear. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the difference. (Not all my make-up is even shown on the left. Hehe.)

I can always trust that when Kavi will be the first to like my posts and have a whine at me for not replying to her e-mails. Her post is already up because I’ve been so busy I’m finding it hard to post at the moment, and you can read that and her other beyond fabulous posts here. I included the colours I know but some I didn’t sorry.

The Little Jar Of Happiness…

13 Jan

What is this you see? A post on a Monday?

(Well sort of, I wrote this yesterday. 😉 )

Being the hipster (not) I am, I decided to do another jar related activity, since the glitter jars are no longer with me. (Mum chucked them out. Don’t think she got why I put purple glittery water into an old jam jar. But some people have no imagination I guess. 😉 ) A while ago I saw on We Heart It or Tumblr that people were making a jar and every time something made you feel good in life you wrote it on a piece of paper and put it into the jar of happiness, which is the name I have given it.

In no way is this my idea, but I did decide to take photographs of how I prettied my jar because why not, you might want to know? (You all answer yes enthusiastically.)

What I Used…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So to make my jar look a lot nicer and less food jar like, I used these ribbon strips that are already gluey are the back so you just have to cut off the length you want. I get it from Hobby Craft for a few pounds and have used it lots of times before to ‘pretty’ bits and bobs up for my room. Then to write the happy things on, I am just using some smallish post it notes in pretty colours like greens, blues and pinks.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I decided to do this because I want to be more positive and happier this year, so I thought this would be a good idea so I can see that good things that have made me feel good have happened. Hopefully at the end of the year it will be filled to the brim and I’ll pour them all out and see my year in post it note form.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here is the finished jar that I have accessorized with spots and pastels. If you are joining the jar of happiness bandwagon please let me know and link me up to your blog links.

I know this post is a bit pants but I want to become a lot more regular when it comes with my posting.

See you all soon,

How To: Find Out Your Eye Shape…

14 Nov

Hello beauties,

Quick life update coming up (Please skip forward if you don’t give a poo): Tomorrow is non uniform day for me at school which equals drama because non-uniforms days are like fashion shows where we all judge what we are wearing, and personally they cause me drama. As I write this it is almost 5pm and I am still to choose what I want to wear? Do I go leggings and be comfy and casual or go all out? Do I wear my shobs with heels or is that too much? Help very much needed right now! In other news, I got a new Twitter (sobs over my 20 followers) because I felt a bit self conscious talking about blogging in front of all the judging people at school who follow me, so please follow me @HighStreetSpy_ and I’ll follow back.

Okay, back to topic. Enjoy 🙂

So a few weeks ago I was on BeautyBay.com admiring all the products I can not afford when I came across an article about eye shapes.(mum says I have way too much time on my hands) It was actually really interesting to find out who your celeb eye double is mostly with a little deliberation with my mum (mine is Miranda Kerr. Yes, I have the eyes of a ex wife of Orlando Bloom/model everyone! Get in.) But also the shape and how to enhance them, so being the kind blogger I am, I had to share them with you in my own, less complicated wording.

Deep Set Eyes (Kim Kardashian Style)

Firstly, if you think this is you. Congrats now you just need the bum and you are on your way to becoming a Kim Kardashian double. But if you already have the butt. Wow.

eyebrow 1

What it Looks Like: Large eyes set deeper into the skull creating an illusion of a prominent brow bone.

Make Up Tip:Highlight the brow bone to make eyes look more prominent and use waterproof mascara to prevent smudges.

Monolid

I don’t like the name monolid… It sounds like you only have one eye. Like Mike from Monsters Inc. But it’s a technical term so I’m going with it. But you have eyes like the lovely Lucy Liu.

eyebrow 2

What it Looks Like: A flat eyelid with little to no crease.

Make Up Tip: Always curl eyelashes. Start with darker colours at the lash line and get lighter, further up the eye to help draw attention upwards.

Hooded Eyelids

You have Blake Lively eyes, you lucky so and so.

eyebrow 3

What it Looks Like: Eyelids have an extra layer of skin that droops over the crease, causing the lid to appear smaller.

Make Up Tip: Tightly line the top lashes to intensify the lash line as this is the most visible part of the eye. When using crease shadows, be sure to go above and past the crease so the shading is visible.

Protruding Eyes

Nicole Richie is your double. She’s a pretty big deal. Go your eyes.

eyebrow 4

What it Looks Like: Gives the appearance of extended lids. You can see more of the eyelid than other eye types.

Make Up Tip: Darker colours will make the eyelid appear smaller, so smokey eyes are a good look. Also, heavily lining the upper lash line will again make the space seem smaller.

Upturned Eye

You are married to Brad Pitt (well not literally because this lady is) and have a famous leg, your eyes are like Angelina Jolie.

eyebrow 5

What it Looks Like: An almond shape that naturally lifts at the outer corner. The lower lid has more emphasis than the top lid.

Make Up Tip: Use dark shadow and line more- so at the outer corners of the bottom lash line to even out the shape.

Down Turned Eye

Down turned sounds sounds sort of sad, but there’s nothing sad about these beautiful eyes like Katie Holmes.

eyebrow 6

What it Looks Like: An almond shape that drops at the outer corners.

Make Up Tip: The perfect shape for a cat eye look. Wing eyeliner out and upwards on the top lash line to create symmetry.

Close Set Eyes

It’s the classic, it’s the beautiful Miss Sarah Jessica Parker!

eyebrow 7

What it Looks Like: Less than one eyes width apart from each other.

Make Up Tip: Create the illusion of more space between the eyes by using lighter shadows in the inner corners of the eye. Adding more mascara to the outer, upper lashes will also draw attention outward.

Wide Set Eyes (Also known as me!)

I know, I know, you are so so excited you look like me right? Forget Victoria’s Secret Model Miranda Kerr, you have Maisie eyes. Whooooop! Basically, we have eyes like those sharks do… You know like on the sides of their heads 😉

eyebrow 8

What it Looks Like: More than one eyes width apart from each other.

Make Up Tip: Use black eyeliner on the top and bottom waterlines of the eye, minimising the amount of space seen. When applying mascara, swipe bottom lashes inwards towards the nose.

Hope this post helps you find and enhance your eye shape like I did.

Right I’m off to do some more revision and pick an outfit (hopefully)

How To: Stay on Trend on a Teenager’s budget…

10 Aug

(This is the post that I recently wrote for adressaday.co.uk and it’s coming to the end of my time being the featured blogger for the week. I had a great time stepping out of my High Street Spy blog comfort zone and getting picked to write a blog post on their site, so thank you to everyone at A Dress a Day for giving me the opportunity to write for you. So here it is for all of my followers on High Street Spy, enjoy!)

Hello everybody,

So being a teenage girl means you’re a lot more self-aware, from the way you look, to creating your own sense of style. Looking back at pretty recent photos of myself I realise that I change what I like so much, I even look at photos from about a month ago and think to myself, ‘what was I thinking, did I really think that top looked good on me?’ or ‘why did I used to wear my make-up like that? I look horrendous!’ I change my mind so much it means I’m forever going off the majority of the clothes I have in my wardrobe and always wanting new clothes. But then there’s another problem with being a teenager in general, the majority of us are skint, the only time we really ever have money is Christmas and birthday time and we can all admit, (unless you have amazing clothes willpower) lasts up to a month or whenever we next pop to town or shopping with our friends. But we are all becoming a lot more fashion and style obsessed but it’s harder for us to follow trends and keep up with all our friends sometimes, we’re forever surrounded by things we can never have!

What I’ve found is that most fashion and beauty bloggers and vloggers are adults, and seem to have unlimited bank balances. I spend most of my time watching videos on Youtube and reading their blogs but they’re always showing us hauls, reviews of products and looks that encourage us to try, but most of their readers and viewers are teenagers like me who want to be like them but will never have the money for it. I understand they really love to use the high quality make-ups and come back with about 30 shopping bags from a trip to the shopping centre but as much as I’d like to do that too, I can’t afford a completely new outfit 99.9% of the time! I guess that is where I try to be different on my blog, because I am on the same sort of budget and into the same sort of things as my readers and won’t talk about things way out of a normal teenage girl’s budget.

So this is how I see it, we can follow trends as teenagers but instead of doing it the typical blogger way of ‘shop ‘til we can’t carry anymore before our arms snap off because we’ve bought every single thing we wanted’, we have to do it the teenager way of the, ‘not breaking into our bank account too much and using our purses in a super savvy way to get exactly what we want, but still looking great, all at the same time’ method. (I made that up myself, simple right? But if that becomes a worldwide craze, remember you saw it here first!) Okay, so it might be a very long sentence but let me explain, I’m not saying don’t spend a single penny, I’m saying invest your money in something you really love that you can mix and match (just like sweets) with things you already have. Such as buying a really nice dress, that you can wear with a pair of converse on a casual day and dress it up with some jewellery or even doing your makeup in a dressier way will make that same dress look smart, sometimes we can’t help buying something new, but instead of buying the clothes, invest in the clothes.

Still a bit stuck for inspiration in investing in your clothes? I’ve put together a little example of my own of how you can take a simple dress from day to night.

My example of making the most from one outfit...

My example of making the most from one outfit…

*Dress~ Topshop

*Converse

*Backpack~ Claires

*Bracelet pack~ Claires

*Bow earrings~ River Island

*Statement necklace~ Topshop

*Wedged heels~ Topshop

*Triangle Earrings~ River Island

When it comes to mixing and matching outfits, it’s all down to thinking what you already have at home and buying something that will last you a long time because it’s super versatile and then with however little money you’ll still have different and fashionable looks even if we are just teenagers.

I hope you all enjoyed reading that blog post, I’ve had a great time writing this post for A Dress a Day and hopefully you’ll all be hearing from me soon!

I love nude nails…

4 Aug

Hi everybody, I hope you’ve had a nice weekend?

A while back I was about to do my nails in a French manicure but instead I decided instead of using the nude as in the French, I thought I’d do them completely nude. This was during school time so I wasn’t sure if I’d get away with it (I know, I’m a rebel in nude) but I did because of the nude isn’t that noticeable. The nude colour I decided to use was ‘Bubble Bath’ by O.P.I and I already have a bit of obsession with O.P.I nail varnish because of the great quality of them and the colours, (and the names of the colours are pretty cool also!)

My favourite nude nail varnish.

My favourite nude nail varnish.

Nude colours are an ‘on trend’ colour right now but I wasn’t completely convinced by the idea of nude because I’ve always been a colours girl. But bubble bath is not completely nude as it has more pink tones in it but also has a slight shimmer to it which makes it more of an interesting and different nudes that I’ve seen.

O.P.I Bubble Bath, Sally Hansen double duty base and top coat, Sally Hansen Mega Shine top coat

The nail varnish is really easy to apply, even for people who are completely useless with painting their own nails like me! I started with a base coat, just to create a smooth layer for applying the varnish and to stop it from chipping, I used Sally Hansen, which is a tried and tested favourite of mine. The only thing which is not as good with using nude is you have to apply quite a few coats to build up the colour, maybe 3 or 4  so you can’t see any of the nail underneath that, which means more time spend on nails and more drying time (boo) but it’s worth it. This colour also looks great in a French manicure for a more pinky look. I finished it with a Sally Hansen High Shine top coat, which prevents chipping and gives it a really high shine, glossy finish.

...and the finished nails

…and the finished nails

After not being completely sure I liked nude nails, it turned out I really love them, I think they look really good with my olive skin tone and the shimmer in bubble bath gives it a bit more depth. If you haven’t tried the nude trend, I really recommend it to broaden your nail colour collection. Nude isn’t as boring as I first thought.

What are all your thoughts? Loving nude? Or too boring for you?
